Bliss Woods Adds 33 Acres of Sugar Grove’s Namesake Woodland

The Forest Preserve District has purchased part of the woods that gave Sugar Grove its name. Protecting it also means addressing two small areas that need lead cleanup.

Information reviewed: October 26, 2026. Acquisition closed: October 7.

What did the district protect?

Sugar Grove has protected another piece of the woods behind its name. The Forest Preserve District of Kane County has purchased 33.09 acres adjoining Bliss Woods, including the southern core of the historic woodland.

According to the district’s October 19 release, the purchase closed October 7. The addition lies along Bliss Road beside the eastern section of the preserve. The district paid $545,985, or $16,500 per acre.

The buyer is the Forest Preserve District, rather than the village. This is a completed land purchase for preservation, with more work still needed on portions of the property.

Why is this woodland part of Sugar Grove’s story?

The district traces the village’s name to a 500-acre woodland in 1834. Its release describes the grove as a maple sugar camp used by Indigenous people for generations, with a little more than half of the historic woodland remaining today.

Preservation of parts of the grove began with a district purchase in 1928. The new acquisition adds land that had remained outside that protection, linking a local place name with an actual piece of landscape that can be conserved.

That is what makes this more than an acreage announcement. A familiar name can become something we use without thinking about where it came from. This purchase helps keep that history tied to living woodland.

What makes the land worth preserving?

The release describes mature oak, maple and ash trees, forest-floor wildflowers and wetlands. District Executive Director Benjamin Haberthur says the land has never been plowed and retains a forest structure associated with its long woodland history.

That does not tell us the age of every tree. It does explain why the district sees value in protecting the land as a connected natural area, rather than treating the property simply as an empty parcel.

For people choosing where to live, natural places are part of understanding a community. The useful local question is how those places are cared for over time. Here, the purchase establishes a preservation milestone, while restoration and access remain part of the next chapter.

What cleanup is needed from the property’s gun-club past?

The district says the property was used by the Aurora Sportsmen’s Club for decades and had been privately owned since 2020. Its release identifies two small areas requiring remediation because of lead contamination.

Those areas will be fenced off until cleanup funding is available, according to the release, which identifies environmental grants as a likely funding source. That is a funding expectation, not confirmation that a grant has been awarded.

It would be inaccurate to turn those two areas into a claim that the entire preserve is contaminated or unsafe. It would also be premature to describe cleanup as completed. This update does not establish the cleanup budget, a completion date or the exact boundaries of the restricted areas.

Protecting land and addressing its past uses can be parts of the same project. The district’s stated approach is to preserve the woodland while dealing with the limited areas that need remediation.

Can you visit the new acreage yet?

The district’s release says the remainder of the addition will be available to the public. That describes its intended use; it does not provide a verified opening date or establish that all 33.09 acres can be entered now.

The existing Bliss Woods preserve page lists 5S660 Bliss Road in Sugar Grove. That is the preserve’s listed entrance address, not a separately confirmed address or entrance for the acquired parcel.

Before making a trip specifically to explore the addition, check current district information and posted signs for access and restricted areas. Follow the district’s boundaries rather than assuming a newly acquired parcel is ready to explore everywhere.

The release does not name the current seller. It identifies the district’s purchase and the site’s earlier ownership and use history, which should not be confused with a verified seller identity.
